When life gives you lemons, make lemonade (or a campus)

Covid-19 undoubtedly left its mark on the Erasmus University Rotterdam, since our lovely and buzzing campus had to be promptly left behind and was replaced by online lectures.

As loneliness kicked in among the Erasmus community due to the restrictions on social interaction, it was time to look for opportunities. ErasmusX – a disruptive innovation unit of the university – thought to themselves: If our physical campus is unavailable until further notice, why not just build a virtual version we can all visit from the comfort of our home instead?

So we did! We’ve built the first Virtual Campus in the Netherlands.

Co-created with Erasmus students

The Erasmus University Rotterdam fully supported the idea, so it didn’t take long until the very first building blocks were laid by members of the Erasmus eSports student association, who were of immense help to this project.

Below you can find a video showing an earlier build of the campus.

Thereafter a professional Minecraft building team helped polish up the final product.

Left an image of our campus shot by Ossip van Duivenbode and on the right an image of the virtual campus taken at the same angle.

It feels just like walking on the real campus

We rebuilt the campus in Minecraft on a 1:1 scale, so walking from one end of the campus to the other takes exactly the same time as it would do in real life.

What can be expected from the virtual campus

The campus is designed as a creative space. It is a way for students and staff to design their own interactions and discover new, innovative ways of engaging with one another through the virtual campus.

Aside from that, we will use the virtual campus for various planned activities such as onboarding all new incoming students during the famous EurekaWeek 2020, virtual tours for prospective students, and the ErasmusX team is also exploring the game platform for educational and research purposes.
